Alright so I've got an idea for VM0! So back in 2019/2020, I used to try to multi-boot as many versions of Windows as I could on both my main laptop and a dedicated VM on what is now my main PC.
I think it would be fun to try this on a public VM! Potential versions (rough):

  • Windows XP (NT 5.1 or 5.2, latter supports x86_64)
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 10 (many releases of this exist though…)

However we could go even deeper, and go after Win9x/Early NT/Windows 11/Windows 8 too, and potentially use server/embedded/modded counterparts of versions.
if anyone is interested and suggests some parameters (disk/partition size, specific versions to use, etc) I can procure the needed ISO files.

I was waiting for a friend to be available to do this but if he isn't for too long I might just begin tomorrow or so.

This is a thread for the discussion of the public virtual machines on chipmunk.land.
Here you can talk about current happenings on the VMs, discuss potential operating systems to be installed on them, post screencaps, etc.

List of current VMs:
publicvm0: chipmunk.land:5900 / vm.chipmunk.land
publicvm1: chipmunk.land:5901 / vm1.chipmunk.land
publicvm2: chipmunk.land:5902 / vm2.chipmunk.land
publicvm3: chipmunk.land:5903 / vm3.chipmunk.land

i need to go onto your machine to delete the 2 mysticgiggle accounts from eso.chipmunk.land and the bot mysticgiggle account from code.chipmunk.land

Haven't you considered the possibility that the specific password you just posted, whch you have previously posted on other public websites too, is what got your account pwnt in the first place?

You had it coming ever since you made your password choices, so I see no need to intervene. Suck it up.

was mysticgiggle2 actually used by mysticgiggle at some point?

i keep on softlocking the vms im sorry i swear its a mistake D:

speaking of – will there ever be ui or something else to restart the vms?

It might be a good idea to add a watchdog device. While it wouldn't completely prevent VM freezes, especially not on Windows, and can be trivially bypassed, it should do a pretty good job at preventing accidental freezes (e.g. OOM) on Linux.

Libvirt's default watchdog device (for the q35 machine type anyway, which is probably what's being used) is itco, which isn't the best. They recommend i6300esb, which should work better than that.
