Intel Itanium emulation is actually a field that, as far as I know, has faced lots of neglect unfortunately. I'm interested in working on it someday (not soon!) perhaps, however I'd like to note that Scratch is certainly not the medium that should be used. The Scratch VM is an absurdly inefficient target for a program, and writing emulators for it shoiuld be done for the sake of novelty, not in an attempt to revive a mostly abandoned ISA. A QEMU fork would make more sense.

And that's exactly why it should get Itanium support! Adding support for it in QEMU would allow very easy integration in different VM managers (virt-manager, GNOME Boxes, …), along with lots of features not needing to be written from the ground up (things like ACPI and PCI, which are notoriously hard to get right - just ask Bill Gates why that is).

And that's exactly why it should get Itanium support! Adding support for it in QEMU would allow very easy integration in different VM managers (virt-manager, GNOME Boxes, …), along with lots of features not needing to be written from the ground up (things like ACPI and PCI, which are notoriously hard to get right - just ask Bill Gates why that is).

Not really, since it currently cannot emulate the Itanium at all. There exists an Itanium emulator, though it definitely isn't complete as it can only run a modified Linux kernel. But at least CPU emulation is mostly if not entirely there, so it would probably be easier to improve that instead of making a new emulator. In case you wanna check it out, it's called Ski, and it's a fork of an emulator of the same name written by Hewlett-Packard.

Edit: FYI I believe it emulates an Itanium 2, so even more work would be needed to run 64-bit Windows XP RTM.

Perhaps I didn't look into it enough, and it has been a while since I did. I also thought of QEMU since it's such a common emulator in general, but Ski does seem like a good target.
