I think you should consider using Anubis or Iocaine instead of writing really long JavaScript files to block scrapers.

I'd prefer not to alter the pages sent to normal users (or any client not overloading the site) in any way.
I also want to keep chipmunk.land compatible with other clients, even if it's to an absurd degree. Anubis, by default, requires JS and Cookies. I have less experience with Iocane, but (assuming Codeberg uses it) it seems many non-mainstream fingerprints can trip it; visiting from my phone used to trip it (can send specs). Also, I once tripped it on IE11 while trying to obtain Librewolf on a fresh Windows 10 (Server 2019) install on an alternate laptop.
About compatibility, it doesn't help that I run public VMs that can contain arbitrary operating systems which in turn ship arbitrary navigators. I remember once when I briefly setting up Anubis last year, someone tried to load the site on a public VM just to be hit with an error page.
Of course, this issue shows I (when first implementing the check, inadvertently) harmed compatibility myself once, but I still find that better than taking the easy way out.

Edit: oops, forgot to say. Iocane tries to poison any client it deems a scraper with garbage data, IIRC. What I meant earlier is various clients inadvertently tripped this check. The software includes a challenge page already, so I find that to be superfluous, given one simply wants to keep a site from getting over-loaded.
I'd also like to note I've seen various complaints on the 'net about Anubis, from issues with using it and JShelter to the fact it requires cookies (which I understand after I once saw how many cookies random sites try to save; seriously, I find it sort of absurd).
